I'm No Karen ... Right?

After a week of upping my game by working out with trainer Monday, Wednesday, Friday and getting steps in Tuesday and Thursday at the university, the plan for Saturday and Sunday was to go nowhere, see no one, do absolutely nothing.

Life is just not fair. A woman my age should not have to work that hard to stay fit, or so I told trainer, who wasn't very sympathetic. LOL.

No such luck on going nowhere, seeing no one, doing absolutely nothing today.

The optometrist called. My new glasses were ready.

An email arrived from a merchandiser. My order arrived, was ready for pickup.

I didn’t remember ordering anything from that merchant, but okay. It’ll be a surprise.

So, today turned out to be a one and done day in that, since I had to go out, let’s get everything done so I’ll at least have Sunday to myself.

Picked up the glasses, picked up the package — which turned out to be a food organization system I saw on TikTok, advertised as keeping veggies fresher longer (I was surprised, pleasantly, because I was looking forward to trying it out, but then had totally forgotten I ordered it), and finished with a stop by Sprouts.

I don’t do designer wear. My favorite designers are Target, Walmart, Torrid … except for where eyewear is involved.

For some reason, only frames from designers like Dior, Prada, Armani draw my attention and, this time, I channeled Iris Apfel and left the optometrist’s office with three Celine’s — one for computer/tv, one for close up needlepoint work, the third a progressive pair for everyday wear.

Driving away from the optometrist, I spotted a business with my name on it, albeit spelled differently.

If I didn’t have trainer, a gym just for women would be something I’d consider. Only, this one is too far a drive.

I kinda sorta turned into a Karen at Sprouts.

I always check the dates on whatever foods I purchase, and I’m amazed at how many shoppers I see not checking dates.

Picking up a carton of Eggland’s Organic brown eggs, seeing the date of 10/14, I put it back, picked up another carton.

Ditto 10/14, put it back.

Pulled out another —10/12.

Seeing a young woman stocking the refrigerated section, I didn’t approach as a total Karen with “Let me see your manager”. Instead, I was a nice Karen, saying “Excuse me miss. Your eggs are dated 10/14 and 10/12. Today is 10/16. Can you help me find eggs that are not expired?”

She was quite nice, went to the back, pulled out two 10/30’s for me.

Still cutting it close to expire before I get to, but better.

I’m surprised at Sprouts pulling something like that — expired eggs, but I’ve no doubt those eggs will remain in the case, waiting for someone to come along, who will pull, walk away, pay for, without having checked the date.

The person won't die or get sick. Expired eggs are still okay to eat. For me, it's just the point that I'm paying for fresh.

Also at Sprouts, picking up red bell peppers, I spotted something I had to try — Striped Red Peppers.

I’ll roast them in olive oil and add to breakfast potatoes. Maybe eat some raw, to see if they taste differently than regular reds.

With everything done, I’m looking forward to at least being able to rest/relax tomorrow, Sunday, so I’ll have the energy to face another week of the same ol same ol come Monday.

  1. My father used to own a general store and he taught me to always look at expiration dates. While the product may be good, the store shouldn't be selling them after there, what's it called, oh yeah, SELL-BY DATE!!!

That said ... love the glasses, especially the needlepoint frames and color!!

    1. The least Sprouts could have done was to mark them down. Give folks the option to by items past the sell by date. Glad you like the frames and color. The older I get, the bolder I go with style and color ... just like Iris :-)

  2. Hope I've got that much energy in 10 years. I'm noticing at 67 that it's hard to keep weight off, or even get it off!
    Love the choices of specs.
Nope, you're not a Karen. I always check dates of produce stuff and eye drops or test kits in the drug store. It's surprising how many are expired. I just reach for the one farthest back instead of chancing the expired ones in the front. Enjoy Sunday; it's definitely okay to goof off an entire day! Linda in Kansas

    1. It's a funny thing about energy ... even when I wake up, don't have it, drag myself to the pain cave or out to walk, I always feel better during and after. More energetic. Sprouts was making it hard to reach back and find the fresh eggs. They'd piled all the old ones up front so that every time I moved one out of the way, checked the date, it was expired. Sprouts is better than that, so don't know what's going on. I should have been a total Karen, photographed and sent to corporate. LOL. Glad you like the glasses.

  3. LOL; now don't go messin' with corporate. Just enjoy your escapade with a victory for the condo unit. Thanks for the insight into being tired before exercise, but feeling better doin' it and after. Gotta get past that hurdle. My new role model you are! Natural Grocers has been pretty good in the KC metro. Don't think I've even been into a Sprouts, but we have them. Linda in Kansas

    1. No worries about my going to corporate. The world doesn't need another Karen. A "hurtle" is a good word for it. Sometimes it's a wall. LOL.

  4. I always check expiration dates. The newer expiration dates are always on the back of the shelf.

    1. I think they're onto our reaching back for longer lasting, because they'd put up a barrier of expired eggs.

  5. I have readers that have the bigger and thick frames and everybody loves them! I use them for the very fine small print. Iris Apfel actually just released her own line of readers and glasses frames.

Some of our stores here, list the sell by and the expiration date...like Whole Foods and Fresh Market. Eggs if kept real cold will last up to three to four weeks in the frig. Most eggs in the store a friend once told me are already more then a week old. Luckily on Saturdays morning I get fresh eggs from my neighbor up the road. It works out since Im only home for three days. When I'm home all the time I was going through a dozen or more some weeks!!!! The weekends are full on English breakfast for me.

    1. Had the optometrist offered Apfel's frames, definitely would have purchased the circle ones. Seems everyone is copying her thick frames. Lucky you, getting the freshest of eggs. Straight from the source.

  6. My favourite eyeglass frames were Oscar de la Renta.

    1. Not sure I've had Oscar's frames but, looking online at his line, they look like glasses I've had in the past. So probably.

  7. Love your new glasses!

It's actually illegal here in the UK to sell any items passed their sell by date. The shops usually check items daily and mark down anything expiring that day.

    1. Thanks! The glasses are quite a change for me. Making it illegal to sell expired items is a great idea.

  8. Guilty. I used to be very diligent about checking dates but somewhere along the line I slacked off. Probably when the kids left home or when I stopped cooking. Glad you reminded me. I'll start checking again.

    1. Once you start checking again, you're gonna be surprised. It's not just eggs. I've run across expired yogurt, expired corn tortillas.

  9. Happy new glasses! And I'm sure that requesting unexpired eggs does not count as Karen behavior.
    Enjoy your rest day!

    1. Glad to have the optometrist off my bucket list. Not a Karen in the traditional sense, but I'm sure Sprouts doesn't appreciate eagle-eyed customers such as myself :-)

  10. That's one of the things that bothers me when I have groceries delivered. They never check to see if the items are expired or close to being. The glasses look great.

    1. When I saw some residents having groceries delivered during pandemic, I wondered about whether or not they were getting the freshest fruits/veggies or those from the backroom that the market was ready to toss out. Three sets of glasses every two years ... I've got a bigger collection than Fred Sanford :-)
