Pivoting

Once again today Tuesday, felt like Saturday, but I kept reminding myself it wasn’t and that, instead of heading to the campus for a walk, I had Tuesday things to do.

Besides, not fining a Turkey Trot that won’t be a hassle to get to, doesn’t look like I will be doing any 5Ks until January, when the Ontario 5K comes to town. So I can pivot my time and priorities from training to doing other things — like crafting.

We’ve not had a baby in the family since I can’t remember when, but granddaughter and her hubby are expecting. That means I’m going to be a great grandma, a G.G.

I do not yet know the gender, but I’m thinking Little Girl.

The Reveal won’t be until Saturday, when granddaughter braids her hair the color of the baby’s gender, posts a pic of her hair on Instagram.

At any rate, I’ve been thinking about making the baby a quilt since granddaughter first told me she was preggers so, having not made a quilt since I can remember when, I thought I’d better get started.

Starting now will give me time to toss and restart another if the first quilt doesn’t turn out well.

I found a gender neutral fabric at the craft store that I like.

I didn’t find a backing I liked, but there’s a cotton twill online that looks like a good match.

The backing is heavy with the pink, so I’d better wait for the reveal before I buy it — make sure it’s a girl.

I don’t care for borders on baby quilts — too hokey, and I don’t care for using the back as a binding. What I hope to accomplish is to stitch all four sides, leave an area open to turn, close that area up, then quilt around one of the colors — probably the yellow.

Thing I’m not sure about is … and here I’d like to hear from you professional quilters, should I use regular cotton batting or iron-on for the fill?

Popping into the hardware store in the same center, I saw what I thought was for kids to post letters to Santa, but noooooooooo. It was for sale — $398.

Who has room for that? Especially when it's only usable once-a-year.

Inasmuch as it looks like I won’t be doing any 5Ks for a while, now seems like a good time to arrange for my booster shot, so I can recover and be ready for training in December for January’s 5K.

  1. I love the fabrics you chose. When we had our daughter we decorated her room ahead of time in pale green, gender neutral. The sheets were light green gingham. Also looks pretty accessorized with blue or pink.

    1. Neutral colors are the way to go. I really like the fabric as well, and bought enough so that if I mess up the first time, I can start over with the same fabric.

  2. The fabric looks perfect for a great-grand-baby quilt. I'm sure your granddaughter will appreciate it!

    1. I may pivot and turn that fabric, that I like, into receiving blankets because I ran across a fabric panel that I love with graphics that represent things the mom to be is all about.

    2. That sounds like a good idea, she will love it!

  3. Sweet fabric. I quilt but have never used iron on batting so can't really help you there. I tend to use a bamboo batting and freehand a pattern to attach the top to the betting and then use a fleece material for backing. Then you can add a bit more quilting at the end safe in the knowledge that the batting won't move (if that makes any sense 🤔😁).

    1. That makes absolute sense, as I have experienced batting movement in a large quilt. Never heard of bamboo batting, but going to check it out. Good advice here. Thanks!

  4. I've never made a quilt but I did crochet a baby blanket when my daughter was pregnant. It was the first time I had made a blanket and even though I don't know how to crochet, I found out later I made my own stitch (LOL) it did come out cute.

    1. Sounds like quite an accomplishment, the not knowing how to crochet but coming up with your own stitch and it worked. LOL.

  5. I use a light weight Polyester. Cotton is so heavy for a tiny baby.

  6. I thought both materials were cute. I didn't realize until you brought it up but I have one old enough to make me a G.G. Wow. How did that happen. It will be interesting though.

    1. The baby will have two great grandmas, me and grand son in law's mom, but I've already called dibs on GG. It's been suggested we be called White GG and Black GG, LOL. Not politically correct, but would be fun.
