Yeast Less

Which one of you is hoarding all the yeast?
Needing active dry yeast for a baking project planned for the weekend, I went to the two local markets yesterday and found none, so I headed out of the area today, checked two markets in that area. Still no yeast.
There must be a lot of baking going on in self-isolation.
Not planning to go any further out of the area, I gave up on the idea of baking and decided to try a different recipe.
Can you guess what it is?

Only thing missing is gluten-free masa, which I hope to arrive by the weekend so I can get started. If it doesn’t arrive, then it’s back to the drawing board as to which recipe I’ll experiment with this weekend.
I’m having better luck with finding needlepoint floss.
I managed to get the two colors I initially ran out of. One source, I found after scrounging around on the internet, would only sell in bulk — lots of 12. But okay, I needed it, so went for it. I was able to purchase three of the other color from a source I found in the United Kingdom. I repeat … THE UNITED KINGDOM YALL! But I got my missing colors and feel lucky to have found them.
It cost me though. What pre-pandemic I could walk into a craft store and purchase for $4, ended up costing $41.
Once active dry yeast becomes available, I imagine the yeast won’t be the only thing to rise. What normally runs around $3.99 a packet is going to rise in cost exponentially.

  1. People who had never used yeast ran and out bought all of it plus flour thinking that no one would be making bread for the duration! Made NO sense to me as you well know, yeast dough is not the easiest thing to get right and takes lots of practice. I've seen lots of FB posts about failures (duh) so who knows if they actually used all of that yeast.

I found a packet in my cupboard from years ago when I did a lot of bread dough making. I gave it up though when I found Bridgeford frozen dough. Let them do the hard work and I can just do the finishing.

    1. The hoarders reasoning for buying up the yeast is hysterical. As for failures, once I get ahold of the yeast, you'll probably see my failure on here. LOL.

    3. LOL. "Characters" is right. I fear my blog would be boring without their giving me so much fodder.

  3. Crazy all the shortages out there. To get yeast and flour, I had to order bulk online from Bakers Authority. 25 lbs of flour and 1 lb of yeast! Shared with my daughter who has a bread machine and has been baking up a storm for us. I love tamales! Hope your needed masa is in stock soon. And what a dramatic price increase on the needlepoint floss! Glad you found it though so now you can finish that beautiful piece.
    Take care,
    Cali G

    2. (I had a typo in my first response) It IS crazy. Items one would never imagine being hoarded are being hoarded.

  4. I thought masa was always gluten free.

    1. Some masa brands are blended with other flours so, to be sure, I stick with brands labeled gluten free.

  5. Are you sure it's not the home brewers that are afraid of running out of yeast?

  6. All the Baking stuff is Sold Out, I guess a lot of people are using Lock Down to become Culinary Jedi and Domestic Goddesses? I'm glad my next Door Neighbor cooks from scratch a lot and Shares.

    1. Lucky you. I suppose if I gave my neighbor/friend The Baker the ingredients, she'd make gluten free hot dog buns for me, but I want to give it a go myself … just to see if I can pull it off, until GF buns become available again.

  7. A lot of people are making sourdough bread now, motivated by being unable to find yeast.
We could not find powdered milk, had to order that from Amazon. I switched to it some years ago as we use it 99% of the time in our tea and only 1% for any other purpose.

    1. There's plenty of sourdough on the shelves out here, so I guess people want to do it themselves.

  8. Thank you for visiting my blog. I'm the one afflicted by crickets. Anyway, your "About Me" section is intriguing, so I just had to read about the yeast problem. My husband bakes his own salt-free bread (he's tinkered with the recipe and it's good), so he"ll be pretty annoyed when the yeast is gone. Anyway, didn't Little Richard have a song about this --"A Whole Lotta Baking Going On"?

    1. And wouldn't you know, I just yesterday placed an online order and forgot to add cricket traps. May have to stop by Home Depot and pickup in person. As for the yeast, your husband might be interested in the source posted in Anne Marie's comment.
