Curses … Foiled Again

Motivated to 1) Qualify for the Mardi Gras medal and 2) Begin the countdown on completing 100 walking miles, I finally at long last got out on the road and began just doing it.

Nearest I can recall, I logged in 1 hour 15 minutes, 3:45 miles. I say “nearest I can recall” because when I went to the qualifying site to log in my time, I opened the tracker on my cell phone and found it failed to record.

That’s not good.

Means I have to do it all again to qualify for that first medal, and don’t get credit towards the hundred; but, oh well, at least my body received the benefit.

Returning to the complex, inasmuch as we’ve not yet received a monthly calendar for February, I stopped into the Community Room to check the activity board, where I found two activities posted for February.

The first activity is the casino trip, scheduled for February 2nd.

Wait!

What?

Today is February 1, the trip is tomorrow February 2, and the residents once again did not receive a calendar of events to know well enough in advance to sign up.

Since none of the residents know of the trip, unless they happen to come upon this morning’s posting in the Community Room, I’m guessing the turnout will be so poor as to result in cancellation of the bus -- the casino requires at least 20.

I do plan to walk again tomorrow -- nowhere near the almost four miles I did this morning. Tomorrow will be just enough to stay loose, limber, until I work myself up to another qualifying walk. And I’ll walk the complex tomorrow, so I can get a glimpse of exactly how many take off to the casino.

Apache’s candlemas party is also tomorrow. The tamales are made and, insofar as flavor, are the best I’ve made so far. However, I’m not happy with a different wrap method I tried. Some of the tamales came out looking like hot pockets.

There’s now some question as to whether I, and a few others close to him, will even attend Apache’s party.

Remember that strange group of women -- that pack of three that hang together with a big intimidating man? The group that never bring anything but always take, even to stealing trays of food and other people’s plates?

Yes, that group.

Let’s call them “those people”.

We residents haven’t had any problems with them lately, because we don’t communicate and let them know our plans.

And before you say we’re being petty and mean.

And there you have it.

At any rate, we learned this morning that Younger Sister took it upon herself to invite those people.

The excitement we originally felt about Apache’s party has been replaced with caution and dread.

The Writer is cooking the pork butt in her unit for Apache, rather than on the grill and says, if those people are in attendance, she’ll just make a plate for herself, then take the remainder down and leave -- fully expecting those people will bring containers and disappear the rest.

I had planned to steam the tamales in the Community Room. Now, the plan is to steam them in my unit, go down at the scheduled time of 2:00 to scope out the situation and, if those people are in attendance, I’m out.

I’ll let folks know individually to come by and pick up a tamale, or I’ll bring tamales down individually as requested, in which case, it will be up to those individuals to keep those people from stealing their tamale.

Oh, and also posted to the board is a February 16th Valentine’s Day Party. No details on whether potluck or what. Perhaps details will be included in the monthly calendar, if and when we receive one.

  1. If you make a lot trips back and forth from the community room to your apartment to get individual tamales that could add up to quite a few steps towards your exercise goal :-)

    1. LOL. I'm beginning to think you and I are kindred spirits because that thought came to me as well.

    2. I carry my cell phone with me at all times. Just going about my normal business I can get about 5,000 steps, halfway to my daily goal.
