Shake, Rattle, Roll

At 9:35 this morning, as I was working on a project for the Baker, the building began to shake, the patio windows and glassware in the unit began to rattle, the couch began to roll.

I began holding onto the laptop for dear life, as the realization hit EARTHQUAKE!!!

I’ve experienced earthquakes plenty times before and, as the building actually moved (not just my building but reports are other buildings as well), this one scared me to where the blood in my body rushed to my head, leaving me even more lightheaded than I’ve normally been lately. So, it had to be much stronger than 3.0 reported.

On the other hand, looking at the earthquake map, the quake may have felt stronger because it looks like we were in the epicenter.

Considering it’s like being in the eye of the storm, we here at the complex have been lucky — buildings still standing, insofar as I know, and only one aftershock felt by me.

Having survived this morning’s quake, I’m not so sure I’m going to survive the Baker’s latest project.

It was just last week when I’d posted she’d asked me to do flyers for a "Labor Day party on September 5 with bingo" well in advance of September’s Labor Day.

For clarification I asked, "Is it bingo or is it a party?"

"Bingo and party, we just don't want to put party on the flyer because then we will have like 60 people coming".

Still not entirely clear, but I worked it out as "Labor Day Bingo", completed and delivered flyers.

So tell me why did I get a text message from the Baker yesterday asking me to do a flyer for Labor Day.

"Didn’t we already do Labor Day?" asked I.

"Yes", but change the date from the 5th to the 8th and label it "party".

WTF?

Who’s on first?

So, as it stands today — 32 days well in advance of September 1st Labor Day, the High Table is planning a "Labor Day Party" (no mention of bingo this time) on Friday, September 5.

I have a feeling that, with so many days for the Baker to rethink the plan, today might not be the end of Labor Day flyers.

Other than that, I did learn from the Baker that the Activity Director quit her job.

Unless someone in the office does the pick-up and delivery back to the complex, or unless and until a new Activity Director is hired, that may very well be the end, after all these years, of Pizza Tuesday — free whole boxed pizzas donated to the seniors.

As for why Activity Director quit …… it has something to do with a manager. But surprise …… not our manager, the one everyone seems to dislike, but her new manager at the agency through which Corporate has contracted Activity Director's services.

Activity Director reported to the seniors that she was "having a really hard time with the new boss, and she just could not take any more how that woman was treating her", so she resigned.

Having gone through the ringer my own self while in the working world, I get it, but I personally think that, though difficult to deal with crazy bosses, quitting is not the way through.

  1. Unfortunately, my way of dealing with crazy bosses was almost always to move on, unless I knew they soon would.

    1. One does what feels right at the time. The crazy bosses were challenges ... opportunities for me to get mentally strong, more knowledgeable about what people do, why they do it. Tough teachers that I outwit, outplayed and often outlasted.

  2. Quitting allows "them" to win. Stay and demand that you continue with the job for which you were hired.
I remember several earthquakes when I lived in California; things shaking at the house, the water in the pool sloshing out.
    Not fun.

    1. Today's quake definitely was not fun and there was one time when I did quit. I left end of workday knowing I probably was not coming back and did indeed phone in next morning I quit. The office manager called, asked why and I said it was the attorney John Craig had told her, the office manager, a big fat lie about me, and she believed him, that I could not believe a professional man would behave like that and refused to work for him. She asked me to come back. I did, arriving late that morning with no one ever knowing I'd quit. Shortly after, John was fired, walked off the premises by the head attorney. Evidently, management had been unhappy with him for some time, had been giving him chances, and my quitting (for a few hours, LOL) because of his telling the Office Manager a lie was the last straw that got him fired. I stayed with the law firm for 20 years, working for various other attorneys, some as crazy as John, LOL, but at least none of the others crossed that stupid line of bearing false witness against me. I'm willing to put up with a lot, but homie don't play what John was putting down.

  3. So glad the Earthquake wasn't stronger an didn't cause devastation, the Earth is rumbling, they just had that 8.8 in Russia and now have had it cause a large Volcano to erupt. I hope Cali doesn't have any more since we sometimes feel the big ones clear over here in Arizona.

    1. This one was scary, but I prefer the earth letting off steam with an earthquake here/there, rather than one big one like in Russia.

  4. Sorry to learn about your earthquake. I checked the AP and could find no story about it. I guess a 3.0 isn't worth their time. Glad you're okay.

    1. Maybe it's San Bernardino that's not worth their time, LOL.

  5. Glad you're okay after that earthquake! There seems to be something going on right now in the Ring of Fire. Russia had a huge 8.8 earthquake on its eastern coast, triggering tsunami warnings all over, including on the Canadian (and presumably also US) west coast. Japan had a tsunami warning from it too.

  6. I sure hope this is not a sign of bigger things coming. They seem to be getting stronger again.

    1. The big one will eventually hit, but at least I'm on the second floor, will having a fighting chance of coming out not buried in building material.

  7. I was the type that preferred to let an employer know at the end of the day I would not be back. I had a difficult co-worker at one time and decided to take a walk. Before Friday, the office noticed my personal items had been going home with me. They figured it out, went to the boss and I was called in. The boss assured me I would not be the one who was going and he would handle it. I went home for the day and when I came back, she was gone. So call me a sissy, lol.
