Yep, that’s the same older panhandler from last week, the one that got that $20 I found.
I guess he had such a good payday at that location that he decided to return.
Later, after thinking about my not giving him anything, I decided it would not have hurt me to help him out. There’s something about the twinkle in the old guy’s eyes. So, I’ve decided to take him on as a project. If I see him again, and it’s no more often than once-a-week, I can afford to spot him the occasional $20.
That’s the Who is back, as for the What ……… remember when Manager tried to lure us into signing up for Rent Café, the third-party portal designed for us to pay rent online, have rent automatically deducted from our accounts at an additional $3.00 a month charge.
She first tried to lure us in by offering a gift card lottery for us to sign up, offering to dispense with the $3.00 a month fee ……… but just for the initial signing up month.
Not getting the wanted response, Manager’s next move was to dispense with the paper form we’d fill out for work orders and tied it into Rent Café …… making it necessary for us to join Rent Café in order to submit work orders online.
Still no takers, Manager’s next move was to tie the Monthly Activity Calendar into the Rent Café — no more paper calendar posted to our doors. We have to access online through Rent Café.
I’m sure Corporate is pushing Manager to get us signed up, and it’s not just that we don’t trust this corporation with direct access to our bank accounts, it’s also that not many here have computers or smart phones to access the portal even if they wanted to.
So, anyway, we’ve thus far been able to get our hands on the Activity Calendar through other means, the last being check the Community Room for a printout.
I did that yesterday, but found no printout.
That’s because I later yesterday received the Activity Calendar through email, from Manager, along with a notice indicating, in big bold letters "AS OF APRIL 1, 2025, THERE WILL BE NO RENT DROP OFF BOX, to make rental payments easier please create an account with Rent Café and pay your rent online".
WTH. She won't give up. Has now blocked us from paying rent unless we sign up for Rent Café.
Is that even legal?
Fortunately, I dropped my check into the drop box a few days ahead of April 1st, but I wondered how those who generally drop off their payments on the 1st were going to pay rent if in fact Manager did remove the drop box.
I went down to check …… the drop box is indeed blocked off.
Talking to the Baker, she said she’s told those who don’t have computers or smart phones to just walk their checks into the office, that management has to accept payment.
I’m not so sure management will allow that, but how else can those who have no access to online manage?
As for me ……… during the no-contact Pandemic days, I mailed my rent check into the office. I’ll be doing that again, making sure to mail it a week ahead of the 1st, giving time for payment to get through the mail process and in management's hands before the 1st.
There’s more than one way to skin a cat.
Two things happened when I popped into the market this morning ……… well actually three things because I forgot to check with my egg contact, see if he had anything for me, which means I’ll have to stop by the market after Friday’s workout.
The second thing was that the cashier asked, "You staying home Saturday?"
"Why, what’s happening Saturday?"
"The protest, but I understand Black people are not participating".
I don't know which protest she's referring to, but she's right about Black people not participating.
Other than working my voodoo dolls, not patronizing Target or Walmart, I and other POC are not out on the streets fighting this one because we told you so. This one is for those who did not listen to clean up.
I didn't say that to cashier, I just said "I stay home every day except workout days anyway, but Cory Booker stood up, so I’m voting for him as our next President".
The third thing to happen at the market was that behind me in line was Name Dropper, one of the newer residents — the woman who was quick to drop the name John Travolta, said her granddaughter is an actress, had a role with Travolta when she was a child.
I meant to offer Name Dropper a ride back to the complex, but distracted by the cashier’s question about Saturday, I totally forgot Name Dropper was there.
Didn’t remember her until, once in the car, driving out of the store’s parking lot, I saw her walking with her cart.
Pulling alongside, I apologized for not offering her a ride sooner, asked if she wanted one.
She declined, but said she’d just bought a box of wine, we should exchange telephone numbers. "You are so funny. I really love you, you should come to my unit, have a glass of wine with me".
Huh?
I'm glad she declined the ride, because she kinda gave me the creeps.
Seems to be going down, the way of Sue and Smoker Patty
She no longer looks healthy. I assume because she's inside her unit, lonely, depressed that life has landed her in an unglamorous place like this, drinking like Sue and Patty.
Plus, she scared me with that "I love you" crap.
Very strange how Management is making it more difficult for Tenants to pay their Rent instead of easier and more convenient, it's highly suspicious in fact. Like they want a reason to Evict folks perhaps? I'm glad the twinkle in the Old Panhandler's Eyes has elicited a generous response to you. My Mom and I used to see an Old Homeless Man with a Dog around the City, he never asked for Money but there was just something about him that endeared us to him and we'd always give him something. He would always use part of what he got for his Dog's Care. He was very Old and I haven't seen him in a long time now, so he's probably gone on to the next Realm... but I do Hope the Dog went first so that he didn't have to worry about what happened to his Beloved Pet.
ReplyDeleteThey have people moving in/out way too fast to be trying to evict anyone. I just thing Corporate has a MAGA brain, doesn't know what the F$ck they're doing.
DeleteYes, Cory Booker would make a great president. Although even my 7 year old grandson would be an improvement.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, I'd vote for your grandson. After all, we're already being ruled by a child.
DeleteI'm sure the community manager is just doing what Corporate tells her to do, but closing the rent deposit box is no bueno!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't make a lot of sense and just might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for some around here.
DeleteIn my community we have several low income apartment complexes that keep being sold to out of state investors (not that they are investing in property improvements). They require online rent payments and most of the tenants don't have access to the internet or the devices to do it. They have resorted to going to the bank at Walmart which somehow can take the money and make the the online payment for them - for an additional fee.
ReplyDeleteI volunteer for a charity that works with persons needing housing assistance. Because of the way our charity works, we do not have an online account and cannot allow online access to our account, nor can we make online payments. We mail a check. And now these goofballs are refusing to give us real addresses and are refusing to accept checks. It is all a wicked web for people without other options.
No addresses and refusing to accept checks seems counterproductive as they won't get paid. I've been reading a lot about real estate scams lately ... people paying rent and even their mortgages to others who don't even own the property. I'll be mailing mine in, but that too seems ludicrous as the mailbox is just steps away from the office. I'm sending mail out, only for it to return to the office steps away. It's an insane world.
DeleteMail it in with a request delivery receipt. BTW since there are some seniors participating in the county housing program, they should check in to whether or not there is an Ombudsman program to investigate this. What do the leases say? Could the requirement to participate in the online payment program be construed as a unilateral increase in the rent without the consent and agreement of the resident or the county (if the county is paying the rent)? Lots of questions. Sounds half baked.
ReplyDeleteSounds like something Elmo would think up.
Will Jay
I thought about mailing certified, but that might make them refuse to accept. Regular mail worked well during the pandemic, so I think it's safe to go that route. I don't know what's going on with the County. I do know there is a lease, other than the one I have. Mine was long before this cafe thing came about. I've never seen the lease newer move-ins were given, so don't know the terms. I'm just going to stand back and see what others plan to do since they do have access to the County and individual case workers.
DeleteI love you? That’s a bit awkward.
ReplyDeleteBaker’s correct that management has to accept payment. I wonder if Manager is really such a complete idiot or is she taking orders from Corporate. I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous. (OK, sadly, I have many times.)
Other than once sitting at my bingo table, I don't even know this woman, she doesn't even know me. Never had a conversation with her, just heard her talk about her granddaughter. So, this "you are so funny, I love you" really threw me for a loop. From what I've observed, she gets along well with others, but seems to want closer relationships than she's getting around here. This ain't Hollywood. And yes, Manager is Corporate's puppet, but her job depends on doing exactly what Corporate wants. She must really need this job, because she's lasted longer than any of the other 10 managers.
DeleteSounds stupid for sure. Sounds illegal too. Can you call corporate to ask? Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteCorporate is the instigator of most of the problems we have around here.
DeleteCan your bank make the payment for you? I have a long list of bills I pay through the bank. They just take care of it every month. It's all done electronically, but the bank handles the actual payment to the various agencies rather than YOU doing it.
ReplyDeleteThat would work for me, especially since all my utilities are paid electronically through the bank, but seems management wants this done through that third party running Rent Café, giving them direct access to my bank account, which makes me uncomfortable. But you've given me an idea. I may open an account at a different bank, deposit just enough monthly to cover rent payments and a little extra to keep the account open without extra charges. I really hate to give into management, sign up for Rent Café, but at least with a separate account, devoted solely to third party Rent Café my major account will be protected.
DeleteA separate numbered bank account for the Rent Cafe sounds like the perfect solution! If you speak with your current bank about it, they should be able to set that up for you without the need to go to a different bank.
DeleteI'm on it.
DeleteI don't see how they can refuse payment when it's offered. They seem to be using intimidation tactics.
ReplyDelete"Intimidation tactics" is exactly what's happening. Taking away our options, forcing us to do what they want us to do.
DeleteIn 2020 my apartment manager's office sent out notices that no forms of in person rent ie..check, money order or cash would be accepted. You can't even go to the rental office in person anymore. Everything is done online and we have no choice but to pay using LetUs or the online portal. We used to have Rent Cafe but they switched to LetUs to pay rent online.
ReplyDeleteIf people start walking into the office, dropping checks on the desk, I wouldn't put it past them to lock the offices, not allow anyone in like at your place.
DeleteI lived in an apartment complex once where if I used the drop box, they claimed they didn’t get it. And it was a money order, so I started the process of getting it traced. But then they found it. It happened a second time. At that point I’d just hand it to the manager and make sure I got a receipt. This was before people really paid things online a lot.
ReplyDeleteMoney Orders went missing when that mean Nurse Ratched was Manager. She actually called the police and had people evicted who challenged and got into her about their missing money order payments. It was later learned that those missing money orders were part of her crimes when she later got fired for embezzlement. No surprise, we knew she was stealing and cashing them in, but no one would listen to us.
DeleteThat old con man in the parking lot called you "sweetheart", didn't he? He's got some game. And yes, Name Dropper does seem lonely, in spite of her contact with "the Stars". Might give her a one-off and then defer her attention.
ReplyDeleteHe absolutely did have game, LOL, and it seems to be working as he's now my favorite panhandler. Maybe I should play matchmaker, introduce Name Dropper to the panhandler.
DeleteLOL!
DeleteYes. We had the pay online $3 charge at my last apartment. To make it worse, we got a separate bill for compound utilities and that was another $3 to pay as it came at a separate time. I understand that it is easier for the corporate office but you are right about those people who don't use computer/cell to pay bills. Just not right, especially at a senior apartment.
ReplyDeleteIf Rent Café is going to be the only way to pay rent around here, then they should only lease to people with laptops and smart phones or provide a communal computer and teach folks how to use it.
DeleteThat last was a great suggestion. JanF
Delete👍
DeleteOur management leans on us to pay by automated deductions too but after getting burned a few times with them withdrawing too much money and then not wanting to issue refunds many of us changed back to paying as we go. Which meant having to close bank accounts and open new ones to get rid of the auto deductions.
ReplyDeleteThe protests tomorrow are going to be epic all across the country. I'm not going----too old to be away from a bathroom that long---but I will be watching online.
Getting burned is what I'm afraid of with this third party doing the deducting. I hope the news is going to show the protests .... they haven't been doing so thus far, but I've been seeing massive protests on TikTok.
