That was the instructions on the emergency alert I received this morning shortly after 10 AM — "Earthquake Detected! Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself."
Only I didn’t feel or hear a thing, but the earthquake site indicated 6.7 three miles from San Diego.
Two of my facebook friends, who live nearby, posted they’d felt it.
The Talker felt it as well, posting ……… "So I’m sitting at the casino on a winning streak. The machine starts shaking then the floor is shaking. Wow! What a win! An Earthquake".
Yeah, I thought just what you're thinking, that it was 10 AM in the morning.
I’m drinking coffee. The Talker is at the casino gambling already.
Talker practically lives at the casino. Spends more time there than in her own unit.
It’s a good thing she’s lucky and usually wins otherwise, with what looks like a gambling addiction, she’d have trouble paying the bills.
Other than an earthquake, not a lot to report as I’ve stayed pretty much inside my unit, not run into any residents since last Tuesday ……… with one creepy exception.
There’s a weird little man on the premises, whom I assume is a fairly new resident with issues.
It was a few months ago that he first came to my attention.
I was outside chatting with a group of residents when, from across the quad, we heard him shouting something and waving his arms at us.
We paid him no mind until he crossed the grassy knoll, approached us babbling something we couldn’t make out.
He was standing too close to me, so I left and returned to my unit.
I didn’t see him again until last Wednesday when I was heading to the Pain Cave.
I was walking towards the dumpster to deposit trash when I saw him appear from around the corner walkway. Something told me to drop the trash, get out of the semi-enclosed dumpster area, make it to the car post haste.
I did so and was at the door of the car when I heard him from inside the dumpster area say, "Where did you go?"
He went in there looking for me.
When he came out of the dumpster area, continued down the walkway, he looked over, saw me at the car door, began babbling something, but did not approach as I locked myself in the car.
Then, on Friday, returning from the Pain Cave and market, arms loaded with workout gear and groceries, I was halfway across the parking lot when I saw him coming towards me. He’d walked through the open side of where the cars drive through, eyes locked on me, coming fast, directly towards me.
If my arms had been free, I could have kept him at bay with one of my tools. Not having that option, him now almost in my face, I yelled "GET AWAY FROM ME!" and swung one of my bags at him.
He immediately walked away.
I should have dropped everything and followed to see where he lives, or at least taken a photo of him, so I can report him to management.
He’s probably not dangerous, just another resident with issues that management, in its desperation to fill one of many vacant units, allowed in; but I’m on guard now to get a photo of him next time, get him identified, find out what his issue is, have management talk to his social worker, caregiver or whoever he lives with, have them explain that he is to stay away from that Black lady he's been trying to communicate with.
Hopefully he got the message and will leave you alone now.
ReplyDeleteI'll know by how he acts next time I run into him that he got the message or whether I need to repeat the message more forcefully.
DeletePut your green lipstick on! That outa do it! If not, pepper spray ain't a bad idea if he invades your space inappropriately, especially after he's been verbally warned.
ReplyDeleteI agree, you need to know this dude's history and management needs to be made aware of his inappropriate behavior. Don't ever assume he's harmless, though he may very well be...or not! Good luck. Be hypervigilant when you're out and about.
Paranormal John
I'd better stay hands free, so I can get to my tools, when exiting the car, even if it means I have to make more trips back and forth to bring in groceries.
DeleteHe does sound creepy.
ReplyDeleteLooks creepy as well.
DeleteSounds like he needs help but management only cares about $$$.
ReplyDeleteI think that's why I'm so reluctant to put in steps around the complex these days, too many shady looking new people. Don't feel safe any longer.
DeleteOh, Shirley, that's so scary. Please do everything you can to stay safe! You are in my thoughts and prayers
ReplyDeleteI learned a lesson ... don't load myself down with bags so that I can't get to my self-defense tools.
DeleteHell no! Glad you're alright toots!!!! But between the fires, floods, landslide and now earthquakes stirring, I told my friend a hard no for coming out. My luck, I'd come to visit for two weeks and that's when the big one would hit and the peninsula would fall in the ocean. I ain't gonna jinx y'all like that, see.
ReplyDelete🤣You're right about that. But, if you ever do come to Cali, I'd love to see you.
DeleteOh Sister Shirley....you KNOW Im looking you up!!!!! I will find us a drag show to go see!!!!!
Delete👍
DeleteHopefully, he’s harmless and will now leave you alone.
ReplyDeleteHe'd better cause I'm not in the mood to be messed with.
DeleteThe first I heard about the earthquake was when the bedtime news showed video of dogs reacting and going crazy in the house. Figured if it was a "big one" they would have led with the story.
ReplyDeleteIf that one had hit any closer, we would have had some serious damage.
DeleteUh, yea, have that spray ready. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteFor real but who would have thought I'd need it steps from my door during daylight hours.
DeleteIt sure seems like there are more batshit crazies since the pandemic and the orange turd/MAGAts are only making them worse. Sadly, women have to be very aware of their surroundings these days, even in broad daylight! Stay safe, Shirley.
ReplyDeleteI miss being able to take a healthy walk around the place. May have to invest in one of those indoor walking pads.
DeleteCould you drive somewhere close but safer to take a nice walk? JanF
DeleteThere's literally no place that feels safe any longer, not the college where I used to drive to walk on weekends when classes were not in session, not the parks, not even the streets outdoors that I used to walk (remember the guy who chased me with a knife?). Strange looking people everywhere and not are all of the homeless variety. I even got accosted in the market once, when a weird guy entered, locked eyes with me, began tracking me until I let him know I knew he was following me. The only place safe these days is inside my unit.
DeleteI had one of those with the strange stair at the last apartment. I thought it was just me being overly cautious until my upstairs neighbor asked me about him. Glad to have my little Buddy with me at those times.
ReplyDeleteMEN!!! Sigh.
DeleteHe may be an alien. Could you tell if he said "take me to your leader"? And if he did, who IS your leader?
ReplyDeleteLOL, but maybe instead of saying "get away from me", I should have said "E T go home".
DeleteOh man I hope you don't have anymore creepy encounters with that guy.
ReplyDeleteMe too! but I'm keeping an eye out.
DeleteWhen we don't know someone or what their problem is, it can be creepy and frightening. I hope you don't have any more encounters with creepy little new Guy. Even if he's completely harmless, if he's making anyone feel alarmed it is not a good thing.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever get a photo, I can check around, see if others have had an encounter.
